Preparation for India

I must say that the plane trip to India reminded me of many of the things I found frustrating about India-even starting out in JFK! I guess we shouldn't have been surprised, since we did fly Jet Airways, an Indian airline. (And Liz has vowed to never, ever fly with them again!) When Liz met me in JFK, we stood in line to see if we could change our seats in order to sit together on the onward flight. As we were standing in line, a Jet employee took our passports (with no explanation) to 'verify' them. Apparently everyone's passport needed to be inspected and verified before boarding, but that information wasn't deemed important enough to merit a general announcement-you had to be lucky enough to have the employee choose your passport to verify. When we got to the counter, another employee took our AA boarding passes and printed new Jet Airways boarding passes (again without bothering to explain anything). We found out later that we HAD to get new boarding passes to get on the plane, even though AA is a partner airline to Jet. [side note: the same did not apply upon our return-AA accepted my Jet boarding pass!]

Then, when we began to board the airplane, the ground staff announced that they would be boarding in rows and began to call off rows. Of course the only people who followed these directions were the white people, who remained in their seats while waiting for their rows to be called. The Indians all swarmed en mass, no matter which row they were seated in. I understand the mentality of Indians swarming for things when in India, I guess I just don't understand it when it still happens outside of India. Old habits die hard, I suppose.

The frustration didn't end, however, once we had boarded the plane. When we booked this flight, it was billed as a non-stop flight, with a brief refueling stop in Brussels. We assumed it would be a relatively quick stop and we would remain on the plane. Well, you know what they say about assuming... Upon arrival, everyone had to disembark from the plane. We were a bit concerned since we didn't have a separate boarding pass for Brussels. Then, we were a bit annoyed to find out that we didn't re-board the plane for over an hour. I'm sorry, but anytime you have to get off the plane and wait for more than an hour in the airport constitutes a LAYOVER and does NOT constitute a non-stop flight.

Luckily, the rest of the trip went smoothly. Oh, except for the crew IGNORING us (passing us by with the drink cart several times). And the entertainment system not working (and the crew not believing us that everyone on our side of the plane was having the same problem!) And them only having vegetarian food by the time they did get around to serving us. It was a RELIEF to finally land in Chennai!

  1. I've now renewed the vow to never fly with Jet Airways again... but at least this time they didn't lose our luggage!

  2. Dear Lori,
On behalf of Jet Airways, I apologize for the inconveniences that you faced during your travel from JFK to Chennai on Jet Airways.
I would like to explain a few of the issues to you.
First of all, your understanding that this was a non-stop flight - we have never advertised our flight as a non-stop. In fact, we advertise our hub in Brussels.
There is sometimes a misunderstanding of the term - direct flight - which is what our JFK to Chennai flight is. You don't have to change aircraft in Brussels, you re-board the same aircraft, but there is a stop over in Brussels. I would appreciate it if you could communicate to me how you thought that this was a non-stop flight. I will give you my email ID.
The troubles you had with the passport being checked - it is a security measure that has to be followed for all passengers - it is to ensure your safe travel.
While one is at the check-in counters for this security measure, we change the boarding passes to Jet Airways boarding passes, so that it is easy for the staff in Brussels for re-boarding.
We do apologize that you did not get the meal of your choice.
    My email ID is avivek@jetairways.com.
Please feel free to communicate with me about this matter. I would appreciate your feed back.
    Best,
    Anu Vivek

  3. Your comment about Indians swarming and Whites listening is racial in nature. You can be a critic but not a person who can discriminate or stereotype people. Please take an effort not to be too cynical about your views.

    Thanks,

  4. To clarify-

Most of my problems with the flight have to do with the lack of communication from Jet Airways' side. There was no communication about the need for passport verification. There was no communication about the need for a new boarding pass. (And, one was required, because a woman in front of us had to go get a new boarding pass DURING boarding.) There was no clear communication about when we were to re-board the plane in Brussels. Additionally, my problem is NOT with the fact that there was a stopover in Brussels-it is the fact that it was a stopover of MORE than an hour, which seems to qualify as a layover.

Interestingly enough, after I posted this, I read an article that said that Jet Airways had been told to crack down on fake passports or their authorization to fly to Canada might be revoked.

  5. If you needed communication on why they were taking your passports, why didn't you ask? I'm sure the employees aren't mind-readers and most people in the present security climate would be obliging and reassured to know they were checked.

  6. Sounds like you're a pampered inexperienced traveler with an attitude. You're biggest problem during this trip was Passport Verification, new boarding pass and a 1 hour stopover in Brussels. Big deal!. Oh yeah the meal... At least you get a meal unlike certain US carriers where you have to fork over $10 for a slab of cheese and some crackers. And the quip about the 'swarming Indians'.. not worth the time or energy to even dignify that.

Here is a piece of advise from a "White" guy who has traveled to every corner of this earth and enjoyed every minute of it ... Roll with it and deal with the inconveniences when you travel. If you let little things bother you all it does is make you even more miserable. If you're afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone stay home!

    1. Well said...I can just imagine what may have happened to them in Chennai!!!There must be another write up about the complains about that as well. I used to fly CO and I found the most cold unkind cabin crew for the whole non stop flight. I happened to come to this site when googling layover in Brussels for 9W and was disgusted by the attitude of the writer of this blog! Just reinforces what the world thinks of our country. We have things so easy here that some of us are spoiled brats.
